Earlier today, at about 11:44 AM on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, members of the BPD Youth Violence Strike Force and detectives assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury), along with members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and Massachusetts State Police located and arrested Josean Ortiz, 32, of Roxbury by virtue of an outstanding warrant in the area of Huntington Avenue and Mission Street in Roxbury.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was wanted on an arrest warrant sought out of West Roxbury District Court on charges of Assault and Battery with a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Carrying a Loaded Firearm. As the officers were placing the suspect in custody, they safely recovered a 9mm Glock handgun loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition from inside a ‘fanny pack’ which the suspect had secured around his chest along with three small plastic bags of crack cocaine packaged for sale and $111 in U.S. Currency.

The warrant was applied for and granted following an investigation into a recent non-fatal shooting that occurred at about 1:52 PM on Monday June 14, 2021, in the area of 36 Fenwood Road in Roxbury. On arrival, officers located an uncooperative adult male victim suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported by Boston EMS to a local area hospital for treatment.

Detectives were able to identify the suspect with the assistance of several witnesses on scene and information obtained from the suspect’s court ordered GPS monitoring bracelet combined with several other investigatory elements. The suspect is expected to face arraignment in West Roxbury District Court. In addition to the charges contained within the arrest warrant, the suspect will also be charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Drugs stemming from today’s arrest.
