SHERIFF TOMPKINS ENDORSED BY MAYOR MICHELLE WU

BOSTON - Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins announced the support of Mayor Michelle Wu for his campaign for reelection.  From Boston City Hall to the State Legislature, Tompkins has garnered widespread support for his work around addiction recovery and reentry services, and his role as a leader in the community.

"I've known and worked with Sheriff Tompkins for years," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. "The things that were true about Steve from the first day we met working on the first campaign for Senator Elizabeth Warren are still true today; he is a passionate, dedicated servant of the people. In his capacity as the Sheriff of Suffolk County, he works tirelessly to ensure that the men and women who are in his facilities receive the kinds of programming, services and care that can help them to return to our communities with an increased ability to pursue and obtain healthy, successful lives. He has my vote, my support and my endorsement."

Over the course of his nine-plus years in the office, Sheriff Tompkins has brought a commitment to civic responsibility and an understanding that government is about helping people and making a difference in the lives of others. He has fought tirelessly for more substance use recovery and mental health services in our neighborhoods, calling for diversion programs to prevent the incarceration of fellow citizens who don’t belong behind bars.

Steve Tompkins understands that being a good community partner is an important role for the Suffolk County House of Correction located in the heart of Boston. When called on, he has offered shelter, services, and a transitional courthouse to people struggling with addiction, mental illness, and lack of housing.

“I am honored and humbled by Mayor Wu’s endorsement and her vision for the City of Boston. I look forward to working with her and continuing to build partnerships with the agencies and organizations in the community that are important to the long-term success of returning citizens and building safer neighborhoods,” stated Sheriff Tompkins.

SHERIFF TOMPKINS ENDORSED BY CORRECTION OFFICERS LOCAL 419

BOSTON - Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins today announced support from the largest union representing workers at the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department (SCSD).  Tompkins garnered this support by championing changes to end racially-biased drug testing procedures and steadfast commitment to the Field Officers Training program.

“Throughout your previous terms, you have run on a platform that pledged solidarity with the Labor Movement and a devotion to a constructive internal labor relationship. As President of your largest employed Union, I can attest that you have upheld your word and have forged an unprecedented rapport between the Municipal Employer and its Union employees,” Said Johnathan Corey.

“You have altered the narrative, and have created a managerial 'open door policy' that promotes cohesiveness and productivity. Instead of implementing uniformed or partisan policies and procedures, your administrators actually approach Union officials to seek out the greatest applicable solution to overcome conditions in arguably one of the most dynamic work environments,” concluded Corey.

Sheriff Tompkins has shown time and time again that he cares passionately about the workers at the SCSD. He has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the men and women who do this difficult, often thankless work of corrections in the fight for pay parity and equity in benefits for doing the same work as their state counterparts.

“I'm incredibly humbled and proud of the endorsement from Local 419 in my re-election campaign for Sheriff. They represent the heart and blood of our organization, and to have their respect and support means that the work we do every day to improve our employees' working conditions is making a difference,” Said Sheriff Tompkins

SHERIFF TOMPKINS’ CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF WITH ROUSING ENDORSEMENT FROM U.S. SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN

BOSTON - Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins officially kicked off his campaign for reelection to the office last night at the Stockyard Restaurant in Brighton. Over a hundred volunteers, supporters and elected officials from across the district gathered to hear from United States Senator Elizabeth Warren, State Representative Jessica Giannino and Sheriff Tompkins.

Representative Giannino of Revere’s 16th Suffolk District kicked-off the program highlighting Sheriff Tompkins’ work around addiction recovery and reentry services, and his role as a leader in the community beyond the walls of the Suffolk County House of Correction.

“I am proud to support my friend, Sheriff Steve Tompkins, in his reelection campaign for Suffolk County Sheriff,” said Representative Giannino. “Sheriff Tompkins is an asset to the Cities of Revere and Chelsea. He is always available and prepared to assist, ready with solutions no matter what issue may arise. He is a strong leader who works hard to safeguard our community by changing attitudes and rebuilding lives.”

Tompkins then introduced Senator Warren to loud cheers from the crowd. Warren spoke of how Tompkins was one of the first people she went to when she was making a decision about running for office and how they had been friends ever since. However, she clarified that the reason for her support went beyond friendship and respect. Warren stated, “I love people who get stuff done. I am here for Sheriff Tompkins, not just because he deserves reelection, but because he has earned it.” She concluded, “He is a tireless advocate for his workers, his clients and the community.”

Tompkins closed out the program by citing several of the core issues and efforts that he has successfully championed over his eight-plus years of service in this role, speaking about his dedication to the safe care and custody of the men and women entrusted to him and his staff at the Suffolk County House of Correction and Suffolk County Jail by the courts.

“We have made a commitment to reducing recidivism through addiction recovery services, work and life skills training programs, mental health and general health care services, and building partnerships with the agencies and organizations in the community that are important to the long-term success of returning citizens,” stated Sheriff Tompkins. “By prioritizing civic engagement, family health and reunification, education and more, we have helped to transform the lives of the people in our facilities.”
